How to Choose a Web Development Agency: 10-Question Checklist

Hiring the wrong agency can burn months and budget. Use this checklist before signing.

The 10 Questions

  1. Who is accountable for delivery outcomes?
  2. How do you define scope and prevent creep?
  3. What does your weekly reporting include?
  4. How do you handle architecture reviews?
  5. What are your QA and release criteria?
  6. Who owns the code and infrastructure?
  7. How do you document decisions and handover?
  8. What happens if milestones slip?
  9. Can you show relevant case studies with metrics?
  10. What is your communication and escalation process?

Red Flags

  • Vague timelines without milestone definitions.
  • No clear ownership for technical decisions.
  • No QA checklist or release gate.
  • No source code transfer terms.
  • Overpromising with unrealistic speed claims.

Scoring Template

Score each question from 1 to 5:

  • 1-2: high risk
  • 3: acceptable but needs controls
  • 4-5: strong operating maturity

Any partner with fewer than 35 total points needs stronger contractual safeguards.

Practical Tip

Ask agencies to walk through one project retro where something went wrong and how they fixed the process.
Mature teams share failure transparently and show system-level improvements.
